Day ONE of the Lakewater Press HOLIDAY BLOG HOP

For the holiday season, we at Lakewater Press thought it would be a good time to share who we are with a little holiday blog hop.

Between December 1 and the 24th we’ll share holiday interviews with our authors and the Lakewater Press staff. It’s an excellent opportunity for us to get to know each other a little better, and to give our readers a peek behind the scenes–or pages!

Perhaps you’ll even find a new blog to follow, or your next favorite book!

(Be sure to read all the way to the bottom for our holiday giveaway!!)

Today’s interviewee:

Name and LWP affiliation: Barbara Quinn Author

Your blog (url)

Where do you live? I split time between Bradley Beach, NJ and Holmes Beach, FL

What are your chances of having snow on Christmas Day? I’m usually left Dreaming of a White Christmas..about 20% chance of snow in my NY/NJ area.

Do you have any favorite holiday traditions? I come from a large Italian-American family so FOOD  is a religious experience, especially at Christmas time. Christmas Eve is a seafood extravaganza. On Christmas Eve we celebrate The Feast of the Seven Fishes, but it can rise to 13 after arguing. It’s a wonderful night, filled with all manner of fish dishes, embarrassing stories, and much laughter and yelling.

Egg nog: Yes or No? Nooooo!

Are you an artistic gift wrapper or a basic “paper & tape” warrior? bags are my savior.

Do you have any special holiday memories that include books? Are there any specific titles you remember? I liked reading The Night Before Christmas to my son. And now I enjoy reading it to my Grandson.

What is your earliest book-related memory? I was about 5 years old when I boarded the book mobile for the first time when I was growing up in the Bronx, NY, I couldn’t wait for the day the book mobile, a van filled with books for lending, made it’s stop on our block. I loved climbing the steps up, studying all the shelves and oh, the smell of paper and anticipation  My favorite book as a kid was The Light Princess. I remember my dad reading it to me at bedtime. It’s a story about a princess who lost her gravity and had to be tethered to the earth.

Do you write/work during the holidays? Yes I write during the holidays, but not as much as so much is going on.

Can you share what you’re working on now? I’m working on a retelling of the Dickens classic A Christmas Carol.

What are your goals for 2018? To write more!

The pictures are of me in my Christmas finest with my Grandmother. I soon removed the dress and stole, er, borrowed, my brother’s Viking outfit  present which held more attraction than my own doll gifts

COVER REVEAL for SOUND of SILENCE by Mia Kerick and Raine O’Tierney

Today is a big day for us- it is cover reveal day for our new YA novel, Sound of Silence CREATED by  the AMAZING and TALENTED AARON ANDERSON!!

Raine has history of co-writing with other MM authors, but this experience is a first for me. Co-writing was an amazing process, because although we had a strong idea of where the plot of Sound of Silence was going, our characters were able to play off each other in a different way than could multiple characters  created in a single mind. Sometimes Seven and Renzy threw each other curve balls and other times they melted in each other’s arms. We had to become our characters as we responded in writing to unexpected actions as we journeyed through the plot.

Here is the blurb for SOUND of SILENCE:

Renzy Callen exists on the periphery of life, and not just because of the horrific childhood event that robbed him of the ability to speak. Walling himself off from the rest of the world as a means of protection, he occupies his time with art, music, and an obsession with self-help groups—whether he needs them or not. His isolation protects him, and he’s immune to drama and emotional games… or so he believes. Everything changes when he meets Seven and Morning Moreaux-Maddox, the wealthy, jet-setting siblings who move from a life of sophistication in Europe to humdrum Redcliff Hills, Missouri.

Both Seven and his sister are impossibly beautiful and elegant, like the stars in magazines and high-fashion models on the runway. When Renzy is pulled into their push-and-pull of affection and rejection, he realizes there is more to both haunted Morning and cold, diamond-sharp Seven than meets the eye.

The three teens embark on a quest to learn the reason behind Renzy’s selective mutism, and something more than friendship blossoms between Renzy and Seven. It’s during this trip of a lifetime that the three realize the truth they seek might be found in the sound of silence.

Sound of Silence will be released from Harmony Ink Press on January 23, 2018.

Welcome to MY NEW YA BLOG WOOT!!

I thought I couldn’t do it… create blog by myself (well, almost by myself). I was certain that it was so far beyond me, it was almost funny. But when several new publishers I’m working with suggested I focus on the literature I am most inspired by–YA LGBTQ fiction– and do something concrete in this direction, I took a risk and put myself out there. I put together… yes, that sound is me hyperventilating.

IMHO, technology is THE HARDEST PART of being an author. You see, I’ve never taken a how-to class. All of my “education” in computer tech (and even social media) has been gained by the seat of my pants. In other words, I’ve begged and bribed my kids, paid assistants, depended on friends who feel bad for me, and now, relied upon another author-the sweet and amazing Laura Stone-to help me get the job done.

And so here it is…. TAH DAH!!!! (It’s not perfect, but then, what is?)

I included lots of stuff I consider relevant to teens, however, more relevant stuff comes to mind each day, so the menu is likely to change, which I can do BY MYSELF thanks to Laura’s tutorial. I am also open to suggestions.

What do you want to see?

I hope you go through the pages, enjoy the images, check out my YA books and the awesome art and music lyrics and maybe get lost here for a while…

A note to teens- I feel pretty strongly that you ALL need to be able to find YOURSELVES in books, which will let you know you aren’t alone out there. And I think it’s important that you meet DIVERSE TEENS in books so you can gain understanding of other kids’ paths. I hope my LGBTQ YA books bring you closer to these places.

I LOVE COMMENTS. Really, I do. Please let me know what you think.
